Given the forecast for today: The shelter WILL NOT be open tonight. So, we’ve been going through a warming trend, and looking at the forecast, it seems clear that we will not likely reach our temperature thresholds during the rest of March. Since our shelter season ends March 31, 2026, this is a good time to thank all who have made it possible to open a volunteer-based emergency shelter this winter. We very much appreciate our guests, who, in the middle of a difficult winter, offered grace and understanding regarding the limitations of our program. We especially thank the volunteers who gave of their time, often late into the night and into the early morning hours, so we could provide a warm space for those who had nowhere else to go on a frigid winter night. We could not have done it without you! Thanks to the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, which allowed us to use their building for the first five weeks of the season. They have been gracious hosts and we applaud their commitment to helping our neighbors. We also appreciate the City of Montpelier and the City Council for their efforts in finding a location for the shelter. They helped us out of a difficult situation. We applaud and support the various outreach workers and agency partners who helped spread the word when the shelter was open and who were in regular communication with us about needs and issues. Andrea Stander served as our volunteer coordinator and shelter manager for the first part of the season and worked tirelessly to develop our systems and ensure that we were fully staffed. She was the best, and we can’t thank her enough for all she did. Stan Brinkerhoff took the initiative to create a volunteer management system that completely changed the way we worked, making scheduling and notifications much easier. Thanks to everyone who has supported this work — we will see you next winter. And if the forecast changes between now and March 31, we will let you know if we’re open.Welcome to Spring (well, the Vermont version).
